  2. Define your budget. By allocating this before starting out you are less likely to overspend.
  3. Tent weight and size. How many individuals or family members will be sleeping in the tent at any one time. For backpacking, the weight of the tent will be a large contributing factor to your decision making.
  4. Tent features. Manufacturers these days are incorporating all sorts of weird and wonderful features into their tents such as extra storage space, extendable flys for a makeshift "porch" and windows.
  5. Make sure you don't need an engineering degree to erect your tent. Some tents are needlessly complicated to erect. Use the KISS principle.
  6. Spend a little extra on getting a tent made out of durable fabric. Scrimping here will only cost you in comfort and money later on down the track.
  7. Believe it or not color is an important consideration. Does the color transmit well into the interior of the tent. Certain colors can create a brighter interior while others will create a dreary and dark interior. Take note that darker colors absorb heat faster than lighter colors making them more suited to camping in the cooler months.
  8. Check the tents weather rating. Make sure you pick a tent that is suited to the climate that you will be doing most of your camping in.
  9. Buy from reputable manufacturers. Some manufacturers are known for superior quality and likewise some are also infamous for their inferior quality. Make sure you know your brands when choosing your next tent.
