Summer, Winter, Spring Or Fall - What's Your Favorite Season For Camping?
What is the best season for you to go camping?
Different seasons will give you different lighting and views.
Summer Camping
Summer is understandably the most popular season for camping as the weather is usually dry and warm. For this reason you can reasonably expect a campsite to be slightly more crowded than in the other seasons. Plan ahead and make reservations so you aren't disappointed. Get there early so you can pick a good spot especially during the weekends.

Winter camping is a great confidence booster. The special feeling of satisfaction you get from realizing that you can endure the trip through preparedness and ingenuity has no equal in the camping world.
Despite what you may think winter camping does have it's advantages. You aren't bothered by insects, snakes, bugs, bears, dust or mosquitoes. Plus, you have to admit, the winter wilderness view is breathtaking.
Other activities that you can only do while
camping in the winter months include snowmobiling,
snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
A huge advantage to winter camping is the fact that most camping grounds will be quiet, empty and most importantly, cheap.
Dangers of winter camping
You must be prepared in winter camping as the environment is unforgiving if you don't know how to handle it. Here are some reminders for winter camping:
- Drink plenty of water to avoid hypothermia. Have a drink even when you are not thirsty and try to have at least a gallon a day.
- If you see a storm coming don't delay but put your rain gear on straight away. If you do get wet change into dry clothing straight away. Nothing sucks heat away from the body like wet clothing can.
- Pace yourself but keep active as movement generates body heat.
- Listen to your body and take notice. If you start to shiver immediately do something to heat yourself up before uncontrollable shaking and numbness sets in.
- Eat lots of complex carbohydrates and avoid simple ones like sugar and starch.
Fall Camping
This season is slowly catching on amongst family campers. The colors and beauty of nature are breathtaking. Fall camping also has the advantage of slightly lesser crowds and insects. Take note that not all camping sites will offer all of the amenities that are available in the summer months such as showers and washrooms.
Spring Camping
Spring is the season of transition. The snow is
melting, flowers and trees are budding and it's time to go
outside and get back to nature after a long cold
winter.
One of the best times of year to go angling is spring. Small mouth bass and walleye are both spawning, ducks are out and about which makes for good hunting, hiking is good, as is canoeing, fishing and boating.
Whatever the season, while you are camping, remember that you are dealing with the wild and it can be unpredicatable. Learn some basic survival knowledge and first aid so you are prepared when the situation calls for it.
