No sleeping bag is the be-all and end-all of sleeping bags. While it can be difficult to find a sleeping that will suit all styles of camping trips it's not impossible.

Carefully consider your needs when choosing. Your choice will greatly depend on where you like to go camping as well as the seasons. Getting to know exatly what is availabe will also help you make a good decision.

Sleeping bags are insulated one of two ways. There are synthetic filled and down filled. Down is by far the superior insulation method and is highly recommended for most camping trips. The big downside however is that in the event that your sleeping bag gets wet it will take forever before you can get it dry again and probably not before it's time to go home. Synthetic filled bags give good warmth and also dry quickly if they happen to get wet. The downside is that they tend to be heavier, making them less suitable for hiking.

camping sleeping bagsThree-season sleeping bags  are great for general purpose camping trips. As a rough guide most of these bags will have a temperature-comfort rating of 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. For more specialised camping such as specific seasons you will need to purchase camping sleeping bags that cater to that season. For winter climes you will understandably need a bag that offers a bit more insulation against the climate than normal. Summer camping sleeping bags are breathable bags and will help keep you cool in the warrmer seasons.

Here are some things to consider when you are purchasing your next camping sleeping bags.

Material - Most sleeping bags are made of nylon or polyester. This is the best material to make them out of as they are easier to keep clean and are more tear resistant. If you are hiking try to avoid cotton material sleeping bags especially printed ones. You may have to concede this point if you have children though.

For even more comfort look for camping sleeping bags that have a lining of taffeta or other non-cotton material. They are more comfortable, breathe better and warm up quicker than their cotton counterparts.

Darker colored materials can be of benefit if you ever need to dry your camping sleeping bags. Darker colors naturally absorb more heat to aid in the process.

Shape - The mummy shape has become popular over the last few years but a lot of people find them too constricting. If you are a wriggler avoid this design as you will need more to space to wriggle in. They do have the advantage of warming quicker and tend to be more of a snug fit. For more space to move around in go for the rectangular or semi-rectangular bags.

Accessories and zippers - Get double sided zippers that allow for openings on both ends. Zipper hooks are good for stopping the bag from opening accidentally. You don't want to be nice and snug only to have the zipper pull open and letting all that cold air in. Insulated draft collars help seal in the heat around the shoulders and neck.

The best way to know if you are going to enjoy your sleeping bag is to try it out. This will depend on the camping store as some might give you a funny look if you ask. If they do let you though don't hesitate to jump in. Remember that a good nights sleep will depend greatly on whether you purchase decent quality camping sleeping bags.
