To fully enjoy the wonders of nature you need to be suitably attired for protection against the elements. Technology in clothing textiles has become rather advanced over the years so we now have lighter stronger clothing that is up to the task of even the most extreme camper.
Here are just some examples of camping apparel that can be bought straight off the rack.
Naturally the most popular materials for camping apparel are made out of textiles that will allow water to escape but will not allow it in. Ever since man started manufacturing materials a lot of research and development has gone into keeping water away from the body whille still allowing air circulation.
Three breakthrough technologies have been the
result of this research and development. We now have
microporous laminates, microporous coatings and
monolithic membranes. All these materials have the
properties of being able to allow water to escape while at
the same time preventing moisture from settling on the
skin.
Monolithic technology is the most interesting in that it absorbs water vapor into itself and uses body heat to dissipate the vapor. The more heat you make through work the more vapor is dissipated.
By making sure your garments are made with material from this technology you are ensuring that you keep dry and comfortable, especially in the colder climates or seasons.
Nylon has also become a popular choice for outdoor wear. It is scratch resistant and very durable for harsh outdoor environments as well as being light and breathable. Polyester has done it's best to catch up and is also a viable alternative since it absorbs less water than nylon and retains more heat.
The most critical need for outdoor weather is
the ability to keep the wearer warm and dry. Most outfits
made out of the above materials will do an admirable job
for both but more extreme colder environments call for a
little bit extra material for warmth.
The hardest choice to make when choosing cold weather gear is whether to go with synthetic or down filled garments. As with sleeping bags, down filled camping apparel will take forever to get dry if it gets wet. Synthetic materials will dry out relatively quickly but are heavier than the down filled counterparts.
Fleece is a good compromise. Fleece has the ability of being able to keep a body warm even if it gets damp. It is also very good at keeping moisture away from the skin.
